Flora Bellawhat does "organic" really mean?
& the delicious things we grow
Organic is a labeling term that denotes products grown or produced under the
authority of the California Organic Foods Production Act of 1996. The principle
guidelines for organic production are to use materials and practices that enhance
the ecological balance of natural systems and that integrate the parts of the
farming system into an ecological whole.
In a nutshell, organic means produced with or based on the use of fertilizers of
plant origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, herbicides
and pesticides in order to preserve the integrity of the product and with minimum
impact on the land.
The primary goal of organic agriculture is to optimize the health or interdependent
communities of soil life, plants, animals and people. Organic farming promotes
biological diversity and the recycling of resources through such methods as crop
rotation, rotational grazing, planting of cover crops, intercropping, minimum tillage
and adding minerals to crops.
Flora Bella Farm is certified by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).
Certification refers to the verification of growing practices through inspections,
soil testing, residue testing and detailed record keeping.
If eating organic is important to you, look for the CCOF label when you shop.
